In English this half term we will be continuing to work on forming sentences and punctuating them correctly using full stops and capital letters. We will also be encouraging the children to use phoneme mats to help with spelling and will focus on presentation and handwriting. All of these skills will be taught through writing recounts, diary entries, descriptions, emails and more.

In Maths we are focusing on addition and subtraction, we are also introducing 2D and 3D shapes. We will be launching this using lots of objects to help. We will continue to work on number formation and counting.

Our Science topic is 'Materials' and will involve us exploring a variety of different materials. This will include sorting a range of materials into categories. We will continue our learning around materials during our spinney sessions (forest school).

This half term we would like the children to read at least 3 times a week as their homework.

We would also like them to practise their letter formation to help with writing sessions.

We will also be sending children home with phonics homework to complete.

This half term our topic is Moon Zoom.

CRASH! What’s that in the classroom? Let’s go and take a look. Stand back everyone – it looks like a UFO has crash-landed!

Over the next few weeks we’ll focus on Design and Technology. We will work to find out who might have landed by exploring the craft and investigating scattered scientific specimens. We will create a ‘Welcome to Earth’ box for an alien explorer. We will discuss what we can put in the box to help explain what life is like on our planet. We will also find out all about astronauts and their sturdy spacecrafts. We will start off small by making an air-propelled rocket. WHOOSH! How far can we make it travel? We will find out the names of the planets. There’s Mercury, Neptune, Mars and – do you know any others? Are you ready for take-off Year 1? Hold tight. 5 4 3 2 1… LIFT OFF!
